500 GRC - Sent and Now Missing

18 posts in this topic

I'm hoping someone can provide a bit of insight into an issue I am currently trying to solve.

I tried sending 500 GRC to a friend a few days ago, and she never received them.

She said that she renewed her CPID on BoincStats, but I'm not sure if that would affect her ability to receive the GRC.

In any case, the GRC were withdrawn from my account and now are out there somewhere.

I figured that if an address was incorrect or invalid, the coins simply wouldn't send.

I sent coins to this same friend in the past without any issues.

Any ideas of how I can get these GRC back or manage to get them through to my friend?

Hi there,

It could be that you forked a small portion of your coins on a fork.

Go to the console in your wallet and type 'repair wallet' or ' rebuilt block chain' something in that order :)

Normally the funds should be put back in your wallet.

( even if only 1 coin of the send ones is a 'fork coin' the transaction will only occure in your wallet

because of the 1 'fork coin/ false coin, the blockhain won't accept it )

Cheers mate!

Thanks, Cassidy.

I'm hoping your suggestion will put the GRC back in my wallet.

Right now it's still rebuilding the block chain, so we'll see what happens.

Whelp - that didn't work.  I'm still out 500 GRC.

I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with the system after this.  Changes can be made by anyone at anytime, without the person who is trying to send the money knowing, and yet there are no safeguards in place to prevent this type of thing from happening?

first, check if you can see the transaction id for the 500 GRC in a block explorer

then, you will know where the prob lies (e.g. if you are on a fork or there is some other trouble (e.g. with the receiver's wallet))

1. So, then your 500 GRC are not lost at all

I can see the transaction in (1) and verified also in my wallet. Thus, it's not lost on a forked blockchain

2. what you should now do is, contact this person:

"and she never received them."

either she is on a !fork (2), or hasn't an uptodate blockchain (3) or so

but again: you sent it to her and that is forever saved in the blockchain

(2) use my bot's function to check if the wallet is on a !fork https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/50958-dpp-and-dpr/

(3) see !snapshot to restore, in (2)

Apparently she switched to Linux, but doesn't know how to use the Gridcoin Wallet with it.

Tried looking on the Linux Guide, but it makes zero sense to someone who is not already very familiar with Linux.

Did a Blockchain Download, but that didn't produce any results.

I'm thinking I'm pretty much just going to get the computer myself, erase everything, reinstall, and hope that things come together.

I'm hopeful that Gridcoin will, sooner than later, move to a less technical format.

It seems this sort of thing just makes people frustrated and they give up.

I am grateful, however, for your attempts to help out; there's no doubt that the Gridcoin community is solid.

copy the wallet.dat which you find on windows at %appdata%/roaming/Gridcoinresearch to Linux at /home/usr/.GridcoinResearch :)

Quez,

That was actually my first thought.  Unfortunately, she deleted everything before that could happen.   <_<

Can you provide the transaction id (TXID) of the transaction you are speaking of? We cannot help without details of the transaction.

Well it would appear that the coins were in fact sent:

http://gridcoinstats.eu/tx.php?id=0105f2517ef5ae3904d671a8a0d6b3059b471a3002da36312b66f1bbf45069d5

So it's not like you were on a fork or something. Does your friend still have access to this GRC address? Is your friend's client fully synced? If the client is not fully synced, then transactions will not show up.

Her client is fully synched.

We did notice, however, that her address now shows up as invalid (ran validateaddress in console).
